Madame Sousatzka (Channel 5 Monday at 8 p.m.). With this engaging 1988 film, directed by John Schlesinger, Shirley MacLaine made her big move into grande-dame territory as an imperious but lonely and frustrated London piano teacher.
The Rules of the Game (Bravo Thursday at 8 p.m., Friday at 1 a.m.). One of the all-time great films, Jean Renoir’s 1939 classic, set at an aristocratic gathering at a country estate, contemplates the decline of the old order as the clouds of war gather. Marcel Dalio stars.
I Love You Rosa (TMC Friday at 6:30 p.m.). Writer-director Moshe Mizrahi’s tender, poignant 1972 film, set largely before the turn of the century, turns upon the Old Testament doctrine that declares when a woman is widowed she must marry her brother-in-law if there are not yet sons to carry on the family name. Luckily, Rosa (Michel Bat-Adam), a 20-year-old widow, is fond of her brother-in-law (Gabi Otterman) and vice versa--but he is only 11 years old.
