A 46-year-old Santa Ana man died Tuesday in a car-van crash that slowed traffic to a crawl on eight miles of the Santa Ana Freeway for two hours, the California Highway Patrol said.
The driver of the car, who was not identified pending notification of his family, died at the scene, according to the Orange County coroner’s office.
At 2:45 p.m., the driver of a Chevrolet sedan was traveling north on the Santa Ana Freeway, just north of the Riverside Freeway, when his car skidded into the fast lane and came to an abrupt stop, said a CHP dispatcher. A van, which was directly behind the car, hit the car’s side door, the dispatcher said.
Highway officials said the tread on one of the car tires apparently had worn away, and the driver lost control rounding a curve.
Traffic was backed up to the Orange Freeway for about two hours while officials cleared the freeway.
It was not immediately known if the driver of the van was injured.
