PLATFORM : Look Outside LAPD
The recent discoveries and allegations of harassment, brutality, racism and the pivotal beating of Rodney King is a sign of a dysfunctional system. An organization is only as strong as its leader, and under the Gates administration an “us vs. them” philosophy has been created and adopted between the Police Department and Los Angeles.
It is behavior motivated by control, power and confrontation rather than the idea of service and protection. By promoting from within it will perpetuate the values and code of ethics that has proven ineffective yet still accepted as the norm.
For new leadership, the LAPD needs to look on the outside instead of going from within. For there to be progress there needs to be change and the best way for that is if the LAPD begins to question its own authority in a more aware and adult voice.
