Fifth-seeded Goran Ivanisevic of Yugoslavia was upset by France’s Thierry Champion, 6-2, 6-1, and fined $1,900 for smashing and breaking his racket twice Wednesday during the Norstar Bank Hamlet Challenge Cup at Commack, N.Y.
Ivanisevic also left the club without reporting to a required post-match news conference, an automatic fine of up to $1,000.
In other matches Ivan Lendl, John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors won in straight sets.
Pam Shriver did not lose a service game in the first two sets but still was defeated by sixth-seeded Katerina Maleeva of Bulgaria, 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 6-1, in the Virginia Slims of Washington.
“In the third set, I think she got a little tired,” Maleeva said.
Maleeva’s sister, Magdalena, lost to Zina Garrison, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Germany’s Boris Becker and Steffi Graf earned the top seedings in the U.S. Open, which will begin Monday.
