FOOTBALL ’91 : THE HIGH SCHOOLS: SOUTHERN SECTION : FREEDOM LEAGUE : Camp Kilpatrick
- Share via
COACH: Sean Porter, 2nd season
LAST SEASON: 9-4-1; 2nd in league, 4-1
PLAYERS TO WATCH: In Camp Kilpatrick’s inaugural 11-man season a year ago, the Mustangs advanced to the Division X championship game in which Montclair Prep handed them a 13-7 loss. However, there is no such thing as a returning letterman at Camp Kilpatrick, a Los Angeles County youth correctional facility. So, someone must fill the void left by Michael Black, who rushed for a Southern Section-high 2,028 yards in 210 carries. Senior tailback Hubert Rush (5-5, 160) might have the name, but does he have the size? “He’s a water-bug-type running back,” Porter said. Anthony Bell (5-8, 175), a senior fullback, is a bruising, blocking back who has never played before. Porter likely will platoon juniors Art Moreno (5-7, 164) and Marc Rivera (6-0, 170) at quarterback. Junior Nannon Williams (5-10, 215) is a fullback. A good-sized offensive line should spark the run-oriented attack. Seniors Demetric Ligon (6-0, 250), Roger Quintana (5-7, 200) and William Carroll (5-11, 205), junior Nakia Smith (5-8, 215) and sophomore Tulanga Alo (5-10, 200) make up that unit.
OUTLOOK: Camp Kilpatrick opened 1-3-1 last season before rebounding with eight consecutive victories. Porter said that once team members began to trust and encourage each other, victories came easily. The Mustangs outscored four playoff opponents, 125-62. “If we grow half as much as last year’s kids did, it will be a successful year,” Porter said. “We would be .500 or better, easy.”
