Junior kicker Lee Ciuffitetti booted a 40-yard field goal with 2 minutes 40 seconds left to give host Camarillo High a 20-18 victory over San Marcos in a nonleague opener Friday night.
Camarillo running back Fahali Campbell established a school single-game rushing record with 282 yards in 29 carries. Campbell scored on runs of 49 and 67 yards and had a five-yard scoring run nullified by a holding penalty. The junior tailback also had runs of 10 and 40 yards erased by penalties.
Campbell eclipsed Tag Johnson’s 1990 school record of 274 yards. Johnson, a senior fullback, provided much of the blocking for Campbell’s record performance.
Campbell’s 49-yard run in the second quarter gave the Scorpions a 7-3 lead at halftime. On Camarillo’s first play of the second half, Campbell raced 67 yards for a score to give the Scorpions a 14-3 lead. San Marcos running back Huy Trinh returned the ensuing kickoff 92 yards for a score, and a two-point conversion narrowed the Royals’ deficit to 14-11.
San Marcos took the lead late in the third quarter on a one-yard scoring pass from Dan LaGreca to tight end Eric Kelly. Ciuffitetti kicked a 33-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to set the stage for his final heroics.
