PADRES UPDATE : NOTEBOOK : Morris’ League-Leading Average Slips

CINCINNATI — Reds first baseman Hal Morris went one for four Saturday to drop his National League-leading batting average to .3187.

Padre outfielder Tony Gwynn, sidelined after knee surgery, is at .3169. Gwynn entered the day in third place in the batting race behind Morris and Atlanta third baseman Terry Pendleton. But Pendleton went 0 for 3 in the Braves’ victory over Houston; his average dropped to .3155.

Padre shortstop Tony Fernandez jammed his back while sliding into home plate in the fifth inning and left the game two innings later. . . . First baseman Fred McGriff went one for four to extend his hitting streak to eight games (10-for-24).
