Stephen A. Weiswasser, a senior vice president of Capital Cities-ABC Inc., was named Tuesday as executive vice president of ABC News. The post had been vacant for three years.
Weiswasser, who has no journalistic background, is a lawyer who joined Cap Cities-ABC in 1986 as chief attorney.
“He has the experience and commitment to journalistic excellence that is necessary for the task at hand,” ABC News President Roone Arledge said in a statement.
The post had been held by David Burke, who quit ABC News in August, 1988, to become president of CBS News. Burke spent two years in the CBS job, then resigned and was succeeded by Eric Ober.
