The high school football game between Chatsworth and Kennedy has been moved to a 2:30 p.m. start time Friday at Chatsworth because of a student brawl Monday at Chatsworth. The game originally had been scheduled for 7:30 p.m., but Chatsworth officials moved the kickoff to avoid a nighttime event on campus.
Campus police used Mace to quell the violence at Chatsworth after about 50 students engaged in a campuswide melee that pitted black and Latino students against one another. One student, whose name was not released, was arrested.
Clearing the way for a forfeit, Taft administrators this week will inform the City Section that the football team used an academically ineligible player in a 34-20 victory over Gardena two weeks ago.
Taft Athletic Director Brenda Creed on Monday said the player who was ruled ineligible did not pass a summer-school course. Taft would not reveal the player’s identity.
Meanwhile, sophomore tailback Derrell Patton, whose academic eligibility also was in question, was found last week to be eligible.
Patton rushed for a game-high 168 yards against Gardena. Taft will fall to 0-2.
Matt Brimigion of Ventura College and Derrick Stewart of Santa Monica have been named Western State Conference co-offensive and co-defensive players of the week.
Brimigion, a sophomore quarterback from Camarillo High, completed 22 of 42 passes for 380 yards and four touchdowns in Ventura’s 49-47 victory over West L. A. on Saturday.
Stewart, a freshman defensive back from Granada Hills High, intercepted three passes in Santa Monica’s 52-14 victory over Compton.
Santa Monica quarterback Scott Altenburg and L. A. Southwest lineman Victor Miles shared the offensive and defensive player of the week honors with Brimigion and Stewart.
Daron Rodgers of Antelope Valley College has been named Foothill Conference defensive player of the week.
Rodgers, a sophomore defensive end, had nine unassisted tackles--including two sacks--one deflected pass and five quarterback hurries in the Marauders’ 27-16 victory over Victor Valley. Rodgers has seven sacks in three games.
