Airbus Unveils Long-Range Airliner: The A340 is the European consortium’s newest entry in a bitter battle with U.S. rivals Boeing and McDonnell Douglas for a bigger share of the commercial market. In newspaper advertisements, Airbus called the A340, a 440-passenger, four-engine wide-body, the most advanced jet ever made. Analysts estimate that Boeing now has 55% of the large jet market, Airbus 28% and McDonnell Douglas 18%. The U.S. government this summer alleged that European Community subsidies give Airbus an unfair advantage over U.S. firms.
