Roy Disney’s Pyewacket, already assured of the ULDB 70s season championship, won the first race of the Kenneth Watts Perpetual Trophy event outside Los Angeles Harbor, then finished second after knocking out rival Brack Duker’s Evolution in a collision at the start of the second race.
Duker’s Santa Cruz 70 lost a one-foot-diameter chunk out of her lower bow when it struck Pyewacket’s stern as Disney, apparently lacking the right of way, tried to turn away. Owners are required to steer their own boats in the regatta.
A protest was pending that could disqualify Pyewacket. Duker did not expect to have Evolution repaired in time for the last two races today.
In winds building from 2 to 12 knots, Pyewacket won the first race in a photo finish with Les Crouch’s Maverick. Mitch Rouse’s Taxi Dancer won the second race.
