Toreros Defeat Washington; USD’s McFadden Gets 100th Victory

Kevin Legg knocked in a loose ball midway through the second half to give the University of San Diego a 2-1 nonconference victory in men’s soccer over Washington. It was Coach Seamus McFadden’s 100th victory at USD.
McFadden, the only soccer coach the school has had, now is 100-107-21 in 12 seasons.
Doug Barry converted a breakaway at 52:38 to put the Toreros (4-6) on top 1-0. Washington (4-6) lost its fourth consecutive match. USD plays at Portland tonight.
Brian Craft-Negrete scored two goals to lead San Diego State to a 4-3 nonconference victory against visiting Grand Canyon.
Craft-Negrete scored at 23:20 and 44:20 to give the Aztecs (8-1-1) a 2-0 halftime lead.
Bill Demke and David Quesada scored in the second half. Quesada kicked the winning goal at 75:43. Grand Canyon fell to 8-3-0.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
SDSU got 31 kills from Gracie Schutt and 18 from Shannon Matthew in a 13-15, 15-5, 15-7, 15-3 victory over visiting Utah in a Western Athletic Conference match. Jennifer Miller added 12 kills for the Aztecs (8-10, 1-1). Utah fell to 9-13, 0-2.
Robin Rabello had 25 kills to lead Point Loma Nazarene over Southern California College, 11-15, 15-11, 15-7, 15-5, in a Golden State Athletic Conference match. Lynette Campbell added 11 kills for the Crusaders (10-10, 2-4).
TENNIS
Andrew Patton and three doubles teams from Point Loma Nazarene were eliminated in the semifinal round of the NAIA Rolex Intercollegiate Championships. Patton lost to top-seeded Dan Ray of Azusa Pacific, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3). Ray advanced to today’s final against teammate Miikka Keronen by beating PLNC players in the past three rounds.
Among the PLNC doubles teams losing in the semifinals were, Scott Dickey and Sean Willete for the men, and top-seeded Marisa Clancy and Tiffany Puckett for the women.
AMERICA’S CUP
The Omnis Company has been awarded the license to run the 1992 America’s Cup Village, the America’s Cup Organizing Committee said. The village is to be open from January though the end of the America’s Cup races in May. The downtown site, however, has yet to be determined.
BOWLING
Jess Stayrook of San Diego was eighth after the third round of the Japan Cup in Tokyo, which pits the top 16 PBA players and top 16 Japanese bowlers.
