ORANGE — Villa Park controlled much of 3 1/2 quarters, fell behind Trabuco Hills in the fourth quarter, rallied to lead again and finally held on for a 19-14 nonleague victory Friday night at El Modena High School.
Trailing, 14-13, after a one-yard run by Trabuco Hills quarterback Pat Barnes and Jason Teno’s kick with 8:03 to play, Villa Park scored the winning touchdown on Ryan Tsui’s three-yard run with 2:32 left. But the Spartans still had work to do after attempting and failing a two-point conversion to leave the score at 19-14.
Trabuco Hills (1-3-1) took the ensuing kickoff and drove to the Villa Park seven, where the Mustangs faced a fourth and goal with seven seconds left. Barnes, who completed 18 of 37 passes for 323 yards with three interceptions, threw to Chad Early for what would have been the game-winning touchdown, but the pass was ruled out of bounds.
Villa Park led, 10-0, with 1:24 left in the first half. Trabuco Hills closed to within 10-7 on a 76-yard pass from Barnes to Cordell Graham.
