Drago’s wine list leans heavily on Italian stars--but there’s also a wide selection of well-priced older wines, including some stunning bargains.
The best values on the list are the two Zinfandels--1974 Sutter Home, $32, and 1975 Ridge Geyserville, $28. But there are a slew of other good values among the 100 selections, including a few French wines, a number of Italian white wines and even an interesting Italian sparkling wine, a Prosecco from Foss-Marai, $21.
Although the list lacks depth in some areas, it compensates by offering excellent choices. I would have hoped for more than three Sauvignon Blancs, but the three listed (1990 Matanzas Creek, $22; 1990 Iron Horse, $20; 1981 Mondavi Reserve, $32) are well chosen.
The list seems top-heavy in Chardonnays (14), but among them are some excellent wines not excessively priced.
Fans of older wines, however, may wish to choose from 1977 Keenan Cabernet, $28; ’77 St. Clement Cabernet, $38; ’77 Diamond Creek Volcanic Hill Cabernet, $50, or from seven Cabernets from the 1976 vintage.
