Toreros Face Pomona-Pitzer

In need of three victories for postseason consideration, the University of San Diego (5-2) begins its quest at 1:30 p.m. today in its homecoming game against Pomona-Pitzer (2-5).

Based on history, this one appears to be the easiest of the three. USD has an 18-1-1 advantage in the series. The Toreros play host to Azusa Pacific on Nov. 9 and play at Occidental on Nov. 16.

“Pomona-Pitzer is similar to some of the teams we’ve played recently--Whittier and Claremont,” said USD Coach Brian Fogarty, whose team routed both Whittier, 31-7, and Claremont-Mudd, 30-3. “They’re struggling a little. But they’ve got some skill people that are outstanding.”

USD saw its share of skill people last week against La Verne, particularly quarterback Willie Reyna, and barely escaped with a 38-37 victory. Reyna completed 29 of 41 passes for 454 yards. The completions and yards were records against USD.

“He was unbelievable,” Fogarty said. “I don’t think I’ve seen a performance like that, uh, ever. He had 359 yards passing in the first half.”

Added Fogarty: “That was the wildest game I’ve ever been involved with in 23 years of coaching. It had a little bit of everything. Number one, we had almost 270 of offense and 24 points by halftime, and we were losing. I’ve never been in that situation before.”
