Susan Hornbeak of Newport Beach is among three finalists in the UC Riverside Art Gallery’s recent juried competition. Jurors--all artists who teach in the university’s studio art department--included Uta Barth, John Divola and Erika Suderberg. She will show her installations and constructions in a solo exhibit at the museum Jan. 12 through Feb. 16.
Laguna Hills artist Willie Herron has completed his second project for the mural program of the Social and Public Art Resource Center in Los Angeles. Herron recreated as a canvas painting a damaged East Los Angeles mural done in 1974 by prominent L.A. muralist Carlos Almaraz. The original mural, which Herron reconstructed from photographs, was titled “No Compre Vino Gallo” (Don’t Buy Gallo Wine) and addressed California farm workers’ grape boycotts of the 1960s and ‘70s. Herron’s canvas now hangs at the defunct Los Angeles Theater Centre, but it may be moved in the coming months.
