A container of gasoline stored next to a fireplace was ignited by embers and started a blaze that gutted a Chula Vista apartment and caused $118,00 damage.
The fire started shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday and destroyed a three-bedroom apartment on the third floor of a building in the 600 block of Telegraph Canyon Road, Chula Vista Fire Capt. Emmett Horsfall said. Five adults who were home at the time escaped uninjured.
Residents of the six-unit complex were evacuated from their apartments overnight as a precaution, Horsfall said.
It is not known why the gasoline was next to the fireplace, Horsfall said.
