In a boys’ Pilot Tipoff tournament semifinal:
Huntington Beach 52, Irvine 45--Huntington Beach’s relentless full-court pressure finally wore down Irvine.
Huntington Beach (3-0) will play Newport Harbor for the title at 7:40 tonight at Corona del Mar High.
Irvine (2-1) led, 29-19, on Ryan Evans’ slam with 6:22 remaining in the third quarter, but the Oilers forced turnovers on the press and went on a 12-2 run. Bryan Chang hit two three-point baskets, and Huntington Beach pulled even at 31-31 with 3:28 left in the third quarter on Tony Gonzalez’s basket.
“Our pressure finally started to take its toll,” Huntington Beach Coach Roy Miller said. Huntington Beach took its first lead, 40-38, on Matt Ambrose’s basket with 3:53 left in the game. Another basket by Ambrose and a drive by Tommy Walden made it 44-38 with 2:15 to play.
Ambrose led Huntington Beach with 13. Brian Linsenmayer led the Vaqueros with 12.
In the other Pilot Tipoff semifinal:
Newport Harbor 58, Marina 53--Justin McIntee scored 37 points for Newport Harbor (4-0).
