NHL ROUNDUP : Canadiens Alone on Top With Victory

Stephan Lebeau and Mike Keane scored second-period goals as the Montreal Canadiens defeated the visiting St. Louis Blues, 4-2, on Monday night and regained sole possession of first place overall in the NHL.

With five victories in their last six games, the Canadiens improved their record to 22-12-2 for 46 points. Detroit and Washington have 44 points each.

The Blues, second in the Norris Division, dropped to 14-11-7. They finished a four-game trip with a 2-1-1 record.

Montreal outshot St. Louis, 39-20.

New York Rangers 4, San Jose 3--Defenseman Brian Leetch scored an unassisted goal at 1:23 of overtime to give the Rangers a victory at Madison Square Garden.

Leetch picked up a loose puck in the right circle, skated to the left circle and beat Brian Hayward with a wrist shot over the fallen goaltender’s pads. With the goal, Leetch extended his point-scoring streak to 10 games.

The loss dropped the expansion Sharks’ road record to 1-15-1, worst in the NHL.
