FDA Reviews More Breast Implant Data: Dow Corning Corp. said the Food and Drug Administration has begun a review of additional data about the company’s silicone breast implants. The company, a joint venture of Dow Chemical Co. and Corning Inc. based in Midland, Mich., was ordered by a federal court jury Dec. 16 to pay a woman $7.3 million in damages for concealing evidence linking ruptures in the silicone-gel implants with tissue disease. The jury in San Francisco found that the company had committed fraud and malice by failing to disclose its own internal research on the implants’ effect on the immune system. Dow Corning, which vowed to appeal the court ruling, said the additional information was provided at the FDA’s request. A Dow Corning spokeswoman said the information requested consists of internal memorandums and material related to court cases challenging the implants.
