COLLEGE BASKETBALL NATIONAL ROUNDUP : Nebraska Jolts Kansas on Night of Upsets

It was another night for the giants to fall, and Nebraska, the biggest giant-killer of them all, led the way with an 81-79 upset in overtime of third-ranked Kansas at Lincoln, Neb. Wednesday night.
The other top-10 upset victims, coming the night after three Top 25 teams lost, were No. 4 North Carolina, No. 8 Oklahoma State and No. 9 Missouri.
Nebraska won its game at the buzzer when Jamar Johnson hit a three-point shot in its Big Eight game against the Jayhawks (19-3, 7-2). Two weeks ago, Nebraska (16-6, 4-5) handed Oklahoma State its first loss of the season at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
Virginia 86, No. 4 North Carolina 73--Bryant Stith scored 30 points and freshmen Cory Alexander had a season-high 24 in the Atlantic Coast Conference victory over the Tar Heels (18-4, 8-3) at Charlottesville, Va.
Virginia (12-10, 5-6) limited North Carolina’s leading scorer, Hubert Davis, to nine points--less than half his average--and outrebounded the Tar Heels 38-32.
Oklahoma 70, No. 8 Oklahoma State 67--Brent Price scored 12 of the Sooners’ final 14 points in a Big Eight game at Stillwater as they ended the Cowboys’ 28-game home winning streak.
After opening the season with 20 victories, Oklahoma State (21-4, 5-4) has lost three in a row and four of its last five games.
Price made a jumper with 42 seconds left to give Oklahoma (16-6, 4-5) a 68-65 lead, then sank two free throws with 18 seconds left to make it 70-67.
Colorado 77, No. 9 Missouri 60--Donnie Boyce scored 21 points, 13 of them in the second half as the Buffaloes (12-10, 3-6) posted their third consecutive home-court upset in a Big Eight game at Boulder, Colo.
The Tigers (18-4, 6-3) went cold in the second half, shooting only 34%.
No. 7 Indiana 103, No. 11 Michigan State 73--Damon Bailey scored 24 points as the Hoosiers (19-4, 10-2) avenged an earlier Big Ten loss to the Spartans (17-5, 7-5) at Bloomington, Ind. and regained first place.
Bailey was held scoreless in the loss, but had 15 points in the first half Wednesday. Indiana went over the 100-point mark for the second time this season.
No. 13 Kentucky 89, Mississippi State 84--Deron Feldhaus scored 18 points and Richie Farmer made six of six free throws in the closing minutes of a Southeastern Conference game as the Wildcats (19-5, 8-3) won at Starkville, Miss., for the first time in four years..
Mississippi State is 14-8, 6-5.
No. 14 Alabama 85, Vanderbilt 64--James Robinson scored 23 points and became the first Alabama sophomore to score more than 1,000 points in a Southeastern Conference game at Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Robinson went over the mark with a three-point basket with 8:01 remaining. The basket gave the Crimson Tide (20-5, 7-4) a 64-47 lead.
Vanderbilt (11-11, 3-8) shot only 38% from the field, compared to 54% for Alabama.
No. 20 Michigan 95, Minnesota 70--Chris Webber scored 14 of his 23 points in a torrid first half as the Wolverines (16-6, 8-5) continued their domination at Ann Arbor, Mich. in a Big Ten game.
The Gophers (15-11, 7-6) have only one victory in Crisler Arena, a 61-50 triumph in 1982. They have gone 1-23 since the building opened in 1967.
No. 24 St. John’s 63, No. 17 Syracuse 62--Chucky Sproling scored the final seven points for the Redmen (15-7, 9-5), including a 15-foot shot with 11 seconds to play that sealed the upset in a Big East game at New York.
The Orangemen (16-6, 8-5) had a chance to win, but missed two shots in the final seconds.
No. 25 Georgetown 60, No. 21 Connecticut 58--Joey Brown stole the ball with three seconds left and went the length of the floor for a buzzer-beating layup at Landover, Md. as the Hoyas (16-6, 9-4) took over sole possession of first place in the Big East.
It was the fifth loss in a row for the Huskies (16-6, 7-6).
Kansas State 64, No. 23 Iowa State 55--Askia Jones scored Kansas State’s final 13 points in the Wildcats’ Big Eight victory at Manhattan, Kan.
Jones scored 17 of his game-high 21 points in the second half for the Wildcats (13-9, 3-6). Iowa State is 18-7, 4-5.
OTHER GAMES
Louisiana State’s Shaquille O’Neal had 19 points, 14 rebounds and 11 blocked shots as the Tigers defeated South Carolina, 74-56, at Columbia, S.C. . . . Mik Kilgore scored 20 points and Temple rallied to defeat St. Bonaventure, 69-60, in an Atlantic 10 game at Philadelphia. . . . Stacey Poole scored 28 points and Florida defeated Auburn, 92-81, in a Southeastern Conference game at Gainesville, Fla. . . . Allan Houston and Carlus Groves each scored 24 points to lead Tennessee to a 98-86 Southeastern Conference victory over Mississippi at Knoxville, Tenn.
