Coin Redesign
By a vote of 172 to 241, the House rejected a bill (HR 3337) to redesign the U.S. penny, nickel, dime, quarter and half-dollar. The bill also authorized several new commemorative coins. Debate centered on a Senate-approved plan to replace the Lincoln Memorial, Monticello, torch of liberty and American eagle representations on the “tails” side of circulating coins with Bill of Rights expressions such as free speech and due process.
