COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Nevin’s Power Streak Continues as Titans Handle Chapman, 10-3

The home-run hitting exploits of junior Phil Nevin continued Wednesday as he slammed two more in Cal State Fullerton’s 10-3 victory over Chapman in a nonconference baseball game at Amerige Park in Fullerton.

Nevin had a home run in the third inning and a two-run home run in the eighth. Nevin has hit home runs in seven of the last eight games, including each of the last four.

He has nine homers this season and 26 in his career, good for eighth on the Titans’ all-time list.

Nevin, a right-handed hitter, said he is just trying to hit the ball hard and go with the pitch, which was proven in the eighth when his home run went high into the net in right field.

His first home run went over the center-field fence.

“He’s put a lot of hard work into this,” Fullerton Coach Augie Garrido said. “He’s installed a lot of time and effort into getting his swing right.”

Nevin also had a double in five at-bats. He has driven in 23 runs in 15 games for Fullerton, which improved to 11-4 and avenged a 6-4 loss to Chapman Feb. 25.

But Nevin was just one among many who hit well for Fullerton, which had 15 hits. Tony Banks also had three hits, including a two-run home run in the eighth that cleared the net in right field and landed on Highland Ave.

Jason Moler had three hits, scored two runs and drove in another, and Bret Hemphill and Nate Rodriguez each had two hits and drove in a run for Fullerton.

Bill Fitzgerald allowed six hits and three runs in seven innings to improve to 4-0.

Larry Stahlhoefer had a two-run home run in the sixth for Chapman (12-7).
