Aceves, who caught every inning in Tustin’s drive to the national Colt championship last summer, is the team leader. “He’s the top defensive catcher in the county,” Glassman said. If Aceves can improve his .232 batting average of last season, he should start attracting the scouts. Pitching is the big question mark. Pedroza was 3-2 with a 2.68 earned-run average last season but he’s the only experienced pitcher on the team. Two sophomores who started on the Saints’ junior varsity team as freshmen, Miranda and Mata, are expected to help. Miranda batted .354 and Mata batted .333. “We have 12 talented underclassmen who are the foundation for what I think will be a rosy future,” Glassman said. Glassman, on playing in a league against six members of the Huntington Beach Union High School District: “The kids at those schools all know each other and their parents all know each other. As for Santa Ana, we’re just 12 guys named Jose to them.” Santa Ana opens at home against defending Southern Section Division 4-A champion Capistrano Valley Friday. Santa Ana’s field has been renamed, “Bill Ross Field” in honor of the former coach who won 477 games in 32 years.
