LOS ANGELES COUNTY : Senate OKs Bill Creating New Transit Authority
- Share via
The state Senate on Monday approved legislation to abolish the Southern California Rapid Transit District and the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission, replacing them with a new Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority, effective in 1993.
A 26-6 vote in Sacramento sent the bill, sponsored by Assemblyman Richard Katz (D-Sylmar), back to the lower house for concurrence in upper house amendments. President Pro Tem David A. Roberti (D-Los Angeles), who handled the measure on the Senate floor, said the new transportation authority was “long overdue and demanded by the public.”
The authority would be governed by a 13-member board to be chosen by Los Angeles County supervisors, the mayor and City Council of Los Angeles, and other cities within the county.
