Oregon Hires Kansas Assistant Green as Coach

Associated Press

Jerry Green, assistant coach at Kansas for the past four seasons, was hired as basketball coach at Oregon on Tuesday.

Green, 49, previously was coach at North Carolina Asheville, where he had a 150-108 record in nine seasons.

Green was the No. 1 assistant to Roy Williams at Kansas and was among the Jayhawks’ chief recruiters. Kansas was ranked No. 2 in this season’s final Associated Press poll, but was upset by Texas El Paso during the second round of the Midwest Regional.

Green’s hiring follows a two-week search conducted by Bill Byrne, Oregon athletic director. Others mentioned for the job in recent days were Steve Lappas, coach at Manhattan, and Neil McCarthy, coach at New Mexico State.

Green succeeds Don Monson, 58, fired March 18 after Oregon finished 6-21, the Ducks’ worst record in 21 years. The team finished last in the Pacific 10 Conference at 2-16.
