A Guide to the Best of Southern California : DESIGN : Stir Crazy

Twenty years ago, just as craftsman Bill Chappelow began to hunt around his property for something to stir a batch of homemade soap, a tree fell, presenting the perfect utensil: a limb.

Today, Tryyn--pronounced treen--a medieval word meaning “of the tree,” the company Chappelow and partner Tom Reed founded in mountainous Guatay, Calif., turns out sturdy, one-of-a-kind culinary implements.

Their velvety-smooth skillet scrapers, stew dippers, cauldron spoons, batter paddles, and Brie and mustard knives follow the natural line and grain of the wood. Prices range from $6.50 to $45.
