Two Planes’ Near-Miss Reported at La Guardia

NEW YORK — A United Airlines jet and a USAir jet came within 50 feet of colliding this week at La Guardia Airport, a spokesman for United said Wednesday.
The spokesman said the United Boeing 727 was on the ground Monday preparing for takeoff when the captain saw the USAir jet fly overhead, 50 feet above his craft. The captain said he heard the pilot of the USAir Boeing 727 tell air traffic controllers that he was going to do a “go-around”--meaning he would cancel his planned landing and climb higher before attempting a second landing.
With the USAir jet safely out of the way, the United jet departed on its scheduled flight.
A spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration said the incident was under investigation, but would not confirm the details released by United.
