OXNARD : Flames Destroy Vacant Building

A fire of undetermined origin swept through an abandoned building near the Oxnard Airport early Tuesday, destroying the remains of a former nightclub, authorities said.
The fire gutted a large Quonset hut at 2425 W. Fifth St. that had last been used as the Tropical Night Club, said Battalion Chief Murray Glidden of the Oxnard Fire Department.
“The building was fully involved in flames when we arrived on the scene,” Glidden said. The fire was reported at 1:30 a.m.
The structure had been vacant for years, its dilapidated exterior partly covered by tropical plants.
Firefighters used a bulldozer from the Ventura County Fire Department to level the building’s charred remains to prevent any flare-ups, he said.
According to Glidden, the building was scheduled to be razed soon. The owner, who was not identified, had been negotiating to sell the parcel to the Oxnard Airport, he said.
No cause of the fire was immediately determined, Glidden said.
