Gibbons, Palmisano Receive Top County Honor

Jeff Gibbons of Oak Park High and Michelle Palmisano of Thousand Oaks High have been selected as Ventura County high school athletes of the year by the Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame.
Gibbons was an All-Southern Section player in baseball, football and soccer.
Palmisano holds most of the county’s basketball scoring records and led Thousand Oaks to two consecutive Southern Section 1-A Division championships. She also holds 12 school letters.
Eight Mission College baseball players have been selected to the All-Southern California Conference team. Named to the first team are Jose Gallegos, a freshman second baseman, Robert Garcia, a freshman catcher, and Lazaro Campos, a sophomore designated hitter.
Named to the second team are sophomore pitcher Eric Duncan, sophomore third baseman Gabe Chavez, sophomore shortstop Mike Rogers, freshman infielder Marlon McKinney, and sophomore infielder Roy Lozano.
David Rojas of Moorpark High, the Southern Section 1-A Division champion in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters, will run for UCLA in the fall.
Rojas has personal bests of 4 minutes 15.72 seconds in the 1,600 and 9:23.68 in the 3,200.
He also placed third in the state Division III cross-country championships last fall.
Laura Hayward of Agoura High, who finished eighth in the 1991 state Division I cross-country championships, will continue her running career at Stanford.
Hayward was the No. 3-runner on the Charger cross-country team, which won its second consecutive state Division I title last fall.
She placed fifth in the 3,200 meters in the Southern Section 3-A Division track championships this year, and she has a personal best of 11:00.15 in the event.
Jim Henderson, a former standout catcher at Westlake High, has been named a first-team academic All-American.
Henderson is a designated hitter at Arizona State.
He formerly played at USC.
The Cal State Northridge President’s Associates 12th Invitational Golf and Tennis tournament is scheduled for Monday at the Braemar Country Club in Tarzana.
The Northridge President’s Associates, a group of community and business leaders, support a variety of research and student-aid programs at the school.
Proceeds from this year’s event have not yet been designated for particular programs.
In the past, proceeds have supported campus programs such as the Center for Cancer and Developmental Biology, transportation for disabled students, scholarships, athletics and special teaching awards.
Player registration begins at 9 a.m. for the golf tournament and noon for the tennis tournament.
Golf and tennis clinics will be held throughout the day and a players’ awards banquet and auction will be held that evening.

“Run for Fun” 5K and 10K races, which will benefit recreation programs in the San Fernando Valley, will be held June 14 at Woodley Park.
A special one-mile run for young participants is also planned.

The second North Valley Criterium, the San Fernando Valley’s largest competitive cycling event, will be held June 14 in Granada Hills.
Hundreds of area racers will compete for $3,000 in cash and prizes against teams from San Diego, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and the Santa Clarita and San Bernardino valleys.
Races will begin at 18000 Chatsworth St. at 7:30 a.m. and will end at about 4:30 p.m.
Proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society’s Van Nuys unit.
