Senate Passes Anti-Gambling Bill

The Senate gave lopsided approval Tuesday to a bill, backed by the sports Establishment, that would ban state-sponsored gambling on sports.
The 88-5 vote sent the bill to the House, where similar legislation is pending. The Bush administration has some technical problems with the measure, but is not opposing it.
Sen. Bill Bradley (D-N.J.), a former Princeton University and New York Knick basketball star, said the legislation “will preserve the opportunity for all young people who desire to participate in sports to regard the game as theirs and not the gamblers’.”
The bill would make it illegal for a state, city, county or Indian tribe to sponsor, operate, or authorize any gambling plan that is based on professional or amateur sports.
The ban would not apply to gambling already authorized and conducted in Nevada, Montana, Delaware, Oregon and North Dakota.
The sports-gambling ban has the backing of the NCAA, NFL, NBA, major league baseball and the NHL.
