Six Southland athletes will be honored at the Latino athlete-of-the-year awards luncheon today at USC’s Town & Gown banquet hall. Honors will go to amateur Los Angeles boxer Oscar de la Hoya, baseball player Dan Melendez of Pepperdine, basketball player Michelle Esparza of Pico Rivera El Rancho High School, swimmer Liz Anguiano of Long Beach City College, assistant football coach Rick Gamboa of Cal State Northridge and wheelchair basketball player Alma Torres of Los Angeles.
