Michael Andretti, making up for time he lost in the opening round of qualifying, won the pole position for the Detroit Grand Prix.
Andretti failed to post a qualifying lap on Friday because of an engine problem. But he had no difficulties on Saturday, driving his Lola-Ford Cosworth XB to a top lap of 101.695 m.p.h. on the 2.1-mile, 14-turn Belle Isle race course.
That surpassed Teo Fabi’s provisional pole lap of 100.614 m.p.h.
Bobby Rahal, the IndyCar series point leader, jumped from seventh to second with a lap of 101.606, while Fabi was able to hold onto third place with a lap of 101.506.
