Movies with Gender and Sex

COMPILED BY THE SOCIAL CLIMES STAFF

New vocabulary: Boy movie. A phrase used almost exclusively by women to describe the “flying-glass films” they get dragged to. Used in a sentence as: “He wanted to do the boy movie thing with ‘Lethal Weapon,’ but I told him to get real, and we ended up going to ‘Far and Away.’ ” The corresponding phrase girl movie has, as far as we know, not yet entered the male lexicon.

Newman’s Wild Ride

Planners of the Carousel of Hope ball to fight juvenile diabetes are not taking any chances anticipation will flag. Press releases began showing up in May and continue to arrive for the Oct. 2 fund-raiser.

This gives folks lots of time to decide what to go after on the extraordinary list of items for auction at the event.

Perhaps most startling is what is described as a hair-raising 200-m.p.h. spin around a track in Paul Newman’s Trans Am. No, no; Newman doesn’t let you drive his car. He takes you. If you prefer your hair un-raised, there’s always the private piano lesson from Dudley Moore or tennis session with Jimmy Connors.

For the gregarious, up for bids will be a feast at Morton’s for you and 100 of your nearest and dearest and a party for 40 at the Hotel Bel-Air that includes 20 “sleep-over” rooms for guests worn out by the revels. Travel packages range from exotic (three days in Marrakesh) to glamorous (four days at the Ritz in Paris--with a “gorgeous couture gown” thrown in).

The list goes on for pages: Four 1993 Super Bowl tickets . . . $100,000 worth of gift certificates at local designer boutiques . . . Spago catering a party for 50 at your house . . . your kid photographed for a Guess? ad. . . .

The expectation is to raise $5 million. That doesn’t surprise us.

If the Kiosk Fits

L.A. is in no danger of being mistaken for a European city, nor is the mini-mall imperiled, but one local who gets around a lot has noticed a proliferation of a structure common in Europe but not previously seen much here: the kiosk. These small open pavilions that sell newspapers and magazines sometimes spring up at other businesses. Three brand-new kiosk locations include Cook’s Coin-Op Car Wash on Melrose, Quinn’s Nutritional Food Center on Larchmont and the corner of La Brea and Santa Monica Boulevard.
