Three Scholars at UCI Receive Research Grants Totaling $42,000

IRVINE — Scholars in UC Irvine’s Global Peace and Conflict Studies program have been awarded grants totaling $42,000 to study a range of issues involving the United States, the former Soviet Union and international security systems.
Historian Keith Nelson, director of the peace studies program, has received $12,000 to explore the impact of foreign and domestic concerns on U.S. and Soviet foreign policy. Nelson will work with other faculty members within the peace studies program as well as with Russian scholars.
Political scientist Russell Dalton has been given a $16,000 grant to examine the public response to the environmental problems associated with nuclear weapons manufacturing in both the United States and the Russian Republic. Dalton will be assisted in the study by UCI postdoctoral fellow Paula Garb.
Political scientist Patrick Morgan, who holds the Tierney Chair in peace research at UCI, has received a $14,000 grant to analyze the regional security systems of Europe and Asia.
