Italy, Latvia, Israel Win Openers

Italy, Latvia and Israel won opening-round games in the European Olympic men’s basketball qualifying tournament Friday in Granada, Spain.
The tournament will determine the four teams from a field of 25 that advance to the Olympics.
Italy defeated Switzerland, 90-61; Latvia edged Poland, 83-80, and Israel beat France, 91-69.
Play at three other sites in Spain will begin Monday.
Two teams from each site will advance to the tournament’s final round, to be held June 29-July 5 in Zaragoza, Spain. The four survivors from Zaragoza will move on to the Olympics, which will begin July 25 in Barcelona.
As the host nation, Spain has automatically qualified.
