President Bush at Earth Summit

The United States has done many things I am very proud of. The list includes: monetary aid to the now defunct Soviet Union, the Red Cross help in Bangladesh, contributions to the United Nations, agricultural aid to Africa, and literary, musical and scientific contributions.
However, the U.S. has also done many things I am vastly ashamed of. This list includes: the Persian Gulf War, the Haitian refugee crisis, the savings and loan scandal, the huge military expenditures contributing to the debilitating infrastructure, Clarence Thomas, and now the refusal to sign the biological diversity treaty.
The environmental summit marks one of the most important meetings this decade, and the U.S. is turning its back on the proceedings. If the biggest polluter in the world is not ready to make the necessary changes, then the treaty will not help much.
