Representatives of Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the nationwide retail outlet, have signed an agreement to purchase 33 acres of land in Simi Valley from a former city councilman, officials said Friday.
The land being considered for development is north of the Simi Valley Freeway between Erringer Road and First Street, said Jim Hansen, Simi Valley’s economic development coordinator.
The development site, owned by former City Councilman Bill Baker, is adjacent to property slated for a regional mall.
Wal-Mart officials and Baker’s representative, Rothbart Development Corp., refused to comment on the purchase agreement.
Simi Valley officials said they were excited about the deal.
“It’s good news,” Mayor Greg Stratton said. “It’s obviously a commitment of some type.”
The city of Oxnard last month approved the construction of a shopping mall at Rose Avenue and Gonzales Road that will include a Wal-Mart.
