Driver to Get a Big Charge Out of This

PHOENIX — Dan Parmley will embark next month on a coast-to-coast journey in an electric vehicle.
“This trip will disprove the theory that electric cars are just for around town,” said Parmley, president of an environmental and energy systems company.
He will use a converted Chevrolet S-10 pickup on the six-day, 2,500-mile trip. The vehicle will leave Santa Monica on Sept. 18 and arrive in Jacksonville, Fla., on Sept. 23.
A flatbed truck hauling a diesel-powered generator will refuel the electric vehicle along the way. Already charged battery packs will be swapped for depleted ones so the pickup won’t have to stop for long periods to recharge.
New battery-charging technologies under development include a “quick charge,” in which a vehicle can be recharged in about the time it takes to fill a car with gas, Parmley said.
