With the exception of Laguna Niguel’s Anne Mall, Orange County tennis players competing at the U.S. Open in New York did not fare well Monday.
Mall, a finalist last year in the girls’ division of the U.S. Open, opened this year’s tournament with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Giana Gutierrez of Colombia.
Adam Peterson of Orange lost to 14th-seeded Enrique Abaroa of Mexico, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, in a first-round boys’ match.
Trevor Kronemann, a former UC Irvine standout, and Ginger Helgeson were eliminated by Canada’s Jill Hetherington and Glenn Michibata, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1, in the mixed doubles quarterfinals.
In a role reversal, John McEnroe found himself on the receiving end of what is being described as “unprintable words.”
After McEnroe and Michael Stich defeated Scott Davis of Newport Beach and David Pate in a doubles match Sunday, Davis had words with McEnroe, and received a $2,000 fine from the U.S. Tennis Assn. for verbal abuse.
