SANTA MONICA MOUNTAINS : Plan Would Spare Mulholland Patrols

A park ranger patrol of scenic overlook areas on Mulholland Drive would be spared from possible cutbacks under a plan endorsed by a Los Angeles City Council panel on Tuesday.

The plan includes a pledge by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy that its rangers will write more parking tickets to compensate the city for its financial help, according to city records.

On a 3-0 vote, the council’s Budget and Finance Committee quickly and quietly recommended spending $36,000 of city funds to underwrite the cost of keeping two conservancy rangers on the patrol. The full council still must approve the matter.

The threat of a cutback in the patrols arose when the conservancy recently declared that its poor financial condition prevented it from continuing to fund the patrol program. Until now, the cost of the patrols has been split between the city and the conservancy.
