Fire Crews Contain 3,460-Acre Blaze

SONORA, Calif. — A force of 1,880 firefighters reached full containment Tuesday night over a fire that burned 3,460 acres in the Stanislaus National Forest.
Control was expected by early Thursday, said U.S. Forest Service spokesman Allen Spencer.
A discarded cigarette was listed as the likely cause of the blaze that started midday Monday in Jupiter, a lightly populated residential area about 10 miles east of Sonora.
No major communities were threatened as the blaze fed on tinder-dry trees killed by drought and a bark beetle infestation.
A road helped firefighters gain quick containment on half of the blaze, said spokeswoman LaVeta Nevius.
“If it jumps the road, we’re in a new ballgame,” Nevius said.
