Bradley Will Announce Plans on Whether He’ll Run Again

From a Times Staff Writer

Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley has scheduled a press conference for next Thursday to announce whether he will seek a sixth term in office.

The event is expected to be attended by a number of the mayor’s oldest and closest friends, many of whom believe that Bradley has decided not to run again. Bradley telephoned friends and supporters Thursday asking them to join him at the New Otani Hotel in downtown Los Angeles prior to the 5 p.m. announcement.

Speculation that Bradley would not run has been growing for several months as the list of people considering running for mayor grew from a handful to a dozen and as several longtime supporters of Bradley said they planned to back another candidate in next year’s election.

The 74-year-old mayor who was first elected in 1973 has refused to confirm reports that he has discussed going to work for at least one prominent California law firm.
