Marion Jones of Thousand Oaks High finished a disappointing fifth in the 100 meters in the World Junior (age 19 and under) track and field championships Thursday in Seoul.
Jones, considered one of the United States’ best hopes for a gold medal, timed 11.58 seconds, well off her personal best of 11.14 that she recorded in winning this year’s state high school title.
Nicole Mitchell of Jamaica won the gold medal in 11.30, followed by Jacqueline Poelman of the Netherlands (11.44), Meriene Fraser of Jamaica (11.49) and Irina Pukha of the Unified Team (11.57).
Jones, 16, is scheduled to compete in the 200 and the 400-meter relay, and she might run a leg on the 1,600 relay team.
She holds the U.S. junior and high school record in the girls’ 200 with a time of 22.58.
