Here’s a random glimpse of the dollars Americans spend, hours they devote and lengths to which they go in the pursuit of happiness and all manner of things related:
* Number of counselors in the American Counseling Assn. in 1992: 208,000. Number in 1967: 45,000.
* Number of mental disorders recognized by the American Psychiatric Assn.: 220. Number recognized in 1952: 110.
* Number of prescriptions for anti-depressants in 1965: 7 million. Number of prescriptions in 1989: 32 million.
* Number of health clubs advertised in the Yellow Pages in 1982: 6,211. Number listed in 1991: 12,146.
* Number of people who say they worked out in 1991: 20.2 million.
* Percentage of Americans who go on a diet each year: 44%.
* Percent increase since 1987 in the number of tanning salons listed in the Yellow Pages: 180%.
* Dollars spent on hair-styling products in 1991: $207 million, up 113% from 1985. Dollars spent on face creams and lotions in 1991: $168 million, up 83% from 1985. Dollars spent on weight-reduction aids in 1991: $423 million, up 307% over 1985.
* Estimated number of cosmetic surgeries performed in 1990: 643,910, up 67% over 1981.
