The U.S. Small Business Administration has approved a $150,000 low-interest loan to rebuild the Aquarian Bookstore, the nation’s oldest black-owned bookshop.
The store, which was at 3395 S. Western Ave., burned to the ground during the April-May riots. Damage was estimated at $185,000, said Alfred Ligon, the store owner.
The store’s holdings were not insured, Ligon said.
He said the loan will cover the cost of leasing a new store and restocking most the lost material. Though he has not decided on a new location, Ligon said the store will remain in South-Central.
Ticketmaster has donated $20,000 to the rebuilding effort, Ligon said.
