Big Program for Senior Citizens

The 13-year-old Long Beach Senior Center, a two-story building at 1150 East 4th St., is second only to Baltimore’s in size and number of programs for senior citizens, according to its director, Nick Apodaca.
“Our attendance has been running 600 to 700 a day in our various programs,” Apodaca said.
In addition to ballroom dancing, activities at the center--which has 190 volunteers and is administered by the Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine--include woodcarving, bridge, weaving, gardening, painting and fitness classes.
There is also a widow-support group, crafts for the deaf, services for the visually impaired, insurance counseling, legal services and health screening.
And if senior citizens are worried about home security, the center will have deadbolts installed in their homes.
Membership cards cost $3.
“All you have to do is walk through the door, be 55 years old and you’re entitled to all the services,” Apodaca said.
