La Verne : School District Split Urged

Blasting the Bonita Unified School District as being biased in favor of neighboring San Dimas, the La Verne City Council called for “deunification” during its Tuesday night meeting.
Noting that four of the five Bonita school board members live in San Dimas, Councilman Thomas R. Harvey said it is time for La Verne to create a school district centered in La Verne.
The issue came up after the council requested a list of priorities for school projects that would be jointly funded by the city and district. In a Sept. 23 letter, Bonita Supt. Ronald Raya listed four projects, including upgrading the tennis courts at Bonita High School and improving the public address system at the school’s Glen Davis Stadium.
Harvey said the list fell short of his expectations and neglected the types of services that really help students, such as counseling.
The council voted unanimously to schedule a discussion on forming a La Verne school district on its Nov. 2 agenda.
