Leftist Cheddi Jagan, 74, unseated President Desmond Hoyte, 63, in a violence-marred election. Hoyte conceded defeat in a written statement. His backers earlier had contested the results from Monday’s vote in this South American nation. The balloting had sparked rioting and clashes between Jagan’s Indian backers and Hoyte’s black supporters.
