Rookie defensive end Steve Emtman of the Indianapolis Colts will undergo reconstructive surgery for a torn ligament in his left knee and will be sidelined for the rest of the season.
The 6-foot-4, 290-pound Emtman, the first player picked during last spring’s draft, was hurt late in the first quarter of Sunday’s 28-0 loss to the Miami Dolphins.
Colt rookie linebacker Quentin Coryatt, the second player taken in the draft, suffered a broken wrist against the Dolphins two weeks earlier. Coryatt is expected to be sidelined for another month.
Dick MacPherson, coach of the New England Patriots, will undergo surgery for a serious intestinal condition for which he has been hospitalized since last week. James Dineen, the coach’s doctor, said in a statement released through the team that MacPherson is suffering from abscesses in his intestine.
Paul McJulien, who had punts blocked in each of the last two games, was cut by the Green Bay Packers, who plan to bring in Bryan Wagner for a tryout. Wagner was the Chicago Bears’ regular punter in 1987 and 1988, and punted for Cleveland in 1989 and 1990.
The Cincinnati Bengals cut wide receiver Brian Brennan to make a roster spot for Reggie Rembert, who is returning from an alcohol rehabilitation program.
